Crop and animal husbandry
The food chain is usually divided into primary production, processing, distribution and retail, and consumption. The characteristics of the final food product depend on what happens at all these stages. Therefore the way in which crop cultivation and livestock farming are carried out is also very important.
Research related to crop production and livestock farming is called horticultural, agricultural, animal and veterinary medical research. Nearly all research in Sweden concerning crop and animal husbandry takes place at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) and it amounts to ca. 450 million kronor a year. The National Veterinary Institute (SVA) and the Swedish Institute of Agricultural and Environmental Engineering (JTI) also carry out research and development linked to crop production and animal husbandry.
